2nd Group Discussion On The Final Research

By Alina Roxley 2009/06/04

We have designed two questionnaires, one is for the owners to answer and the other is for the students to answer. Teacher said our questions are quite focus to the points, and should be no big problems.

The biggest challenge of our research has been the difficulty to contact the owners of schools. Teacher offered us several information of organizations and owners. I'm lucky to have got to know one girl from a group. Her husband is the owner of Eurocall, one of the information teacher gave us. I told her husband, Groovy, that my teacher is a member at Edunation and he was very helpful. He gave me a lot of links of English teaching organizations and Universities, which are mentioned by teacher, too. Thus, I visited Avalon Learning, Lancelot, LanguageLab, British Council, and Kamimo. Then I added the owners of these places, and Kip Yellowjacket mentioned by teacher, and wrote to the owner of LanguageLad which provides their e-mail. Now all I can do is to wait for their reply.

I haven't thought that it would be so difficult to contact the owners and It has become a big challenge to our research.

We have to give up ESL!

2009/5/31 by Alina

I have to give up ESL because something really bad happened. The runner is not so friendly and he doubts my real purpose even I have told him I’m doing what kind of research, where I’m from, and what I study.

[8:07] Alina Roxley: u think i'm not honest?
[8:07] Giovanni Tweak: I don't know
[8:08] Alina Roxley: u think that i tell i'm doing research is a lie?
[8:08] Giovanni Tweak: I have no idea
[8:09] Giovanni Tweak: You are on private property, inside a private business

I have been always plain, but he acted he believes me but actually doubts in the mind. I think I have made everything clear and told him everything in the first talk. I even gave me my blog, isn’t it honest and clear enough?

[5:54] Giovanni Tweak: are you looking for English lessons?
[5:55] Alina Roxley: u can say that, but my group is going to make some project about english teaching on SL
[5:55] Alina Roxley: from a course in my deparment
[5:55] Alina Roxley: we r eng majors
[5:56] Alina Roxley: i have been here waiting for u
[5:57] Alina Roxley: would u like that our group have an interview with u?
[5:57] Alina Roxley: or final project will be posted on SL or CNN iReport
[5:57] Alina Roxley: our
[5:58] Giovanni Tweak: Yes
[5:58] Alina Roxley: it's a project supported by my school
[5:59] Giovanni Tweak: I agreed to be interviewed
[6:00] Alina Roxley: before that i'd like to know more about ur organization
[6:00] Alina Roxley: yes a written questionnaire
[6:01] Alina Roxley: and our conversations will be included too

He agreed that we include ESL in our research at the first talk, but in the last talk, he got things plain and showed he actually doesn’t like to be researched but still agreed on my research. How absurd! He wants to know more about my research, so I gave him my blog to let him read the details. He told me he didn’t read it because it’s too long to read. But he didn’t tell me this until last talk. I don’t think it’s so long (he doesn’t have to read the posted history text.), and I suppose if he’s not satisfied with my general introduction on SL and wants to know the details, the details are just that length.

[8:45] Giovanni Tweak: why is your reasearch good for the school?
[8:45] Giovanni Tweak: this school?
[8:45] Giovanni Tweak: so it will take more visitors like you?
[8:45] Giovanni Tweak: this is not a zoo
[8:45] Giovanni Tweak: for your research
[8:46] Giovanni Tweak: but this is how I see you
[8:47] Giovanni Tweak: I will give you my e-mail address
[8:47] Giovanni Tweak: ok?
[8:47] Alina Roxley: it's good to be plain like this
[8:47] Giovanni Tweak: giovanni_tweak@yahoo.com
[8:47] Giovanni Tweak: please introduce yourself and your research
[8:48] Alina Roxley: i thought my blog is quite clear to u
[8:48] Giovanni Tweak: and please, ask me for an appointment before coming back to the school
[8:48] Giovanni Tweak: i didn't read it
[8:48] Giovanni Tweak: it's very long
[8:48] Alina Roxley: but if u want to know details
[8:49] Alina Roxley: it's as long as that
[8:49] Alina Roxley: since u r not satisfied with what i tell u on SL
[8:49] Alina Roxley: so i guess u want details
[8:49] Alina Roxley: and i don;t get it
[8:50] Alina Roxley: if u think u don;t get anything good from my research
[8:50] Alina Roxley: and u think it makes ur ESL like a zoo
[8:50] Alina Roxley: why u still want appointment with me
[8:52] Alina Roxley: so u don't like this kind of feeling
[8:52] Alina Roxley: and u still tell me to make appointment with u
[8:52] Giovanni Tweak: then don't
[8:52] Giovanni Tweak: it's up to you
[8:52] Alina Roxley: actually it's up to u

Of course it’s up to him. He should have been plain in the beginning. If he doesn’t like it, he can just tell and refuse our research. And I told him it’s his decision to let us include his ESL or not!

[8:26] Alina Roxley: do u think i want to lie?
[8:26] Alina Roxley: is doing research something needed to be hidden
[8:26] Alina Roxley: first i greet them
[8:27] Alina Roxley: then i told them i'm doing research of what
[8:27] Alina Roxley: and where i'm from and what i study
[8:27] Alina Roxley: i'm not a reporter
[8:27] Alina Roxley: do u think i want to pry out something that hurt ur organization?
[8:28] Alina Roxley: and i showed u my bblog
[8:28] Alina Roxley: it's clear what i'm doing
[8:29] Alina Roxley: if u don't feel comfortable or u feel doubtful of my purpose
[8:29] Alina Roxley: u can tell me
[8:29] Alina Roxley: i'm quite plain
[8:33] Alina Roxley: u make me confused
[8:34] Alina Roxley: just say what u like and what u don't like
[8:34] Alina Roxley: and what's the most important is that u can tell me if u want me to include ESL into my research
[8:34] Giovanni Tweak: [8:06] Giovanni Tweak: you told me you have no microphone, right? Giovanni Tweak: and i told you to ask for an appointment
[8:32] Giovanni Tweak: I have told you what I needed to tell you
[8:32] Giovanni Tweak: and i have other things to do
[8:32] Alina Roxley: so?
[8:33] Alina Roxley: why don't u reply what i said/
[8:33] Alina Roxley: ?
[8:35] Alina Roxley: well actually
[8:35] Alina Roxley: the essence of the research needs more different angles
[8:36] Alina Roxley: that's why i'm trying to talk to more people
[8:37] Alina Roxley: we also need others' help here
[8:37] Alina Roxley: but it's ur firm
[8:37] Alina Roxley: so if u think it's not good for the running of ESL
[8:37] Alina Roxley: it's ok
[8:38] Alina Roxley: why i try i know more people here
[8:38] Alina Roxley: is because i 'd like to ask for their answers to the questionnaire
[8:39] Alina Roxley: i think it's quite clear on my blog
[8:40] Alina Roxley: about how we r going to do the research
[8:40] Alina Roxley: what i want u to know is
[8:40] Alina Roxley: u always have the right to decide u accept it or not

At first time, he just told me not to let visitors think I’m a worker of ESL and always let them know I’m doing research before I ask questions. I think I’ve always told everybody I’m doing what kind of research, where I’m from, and what I study before I ask further questions, and they all seem very helpful. In the last talk, he told me we didn’t understand each in the first talk. I get really confused. I let my avatar stay at ESL always even when I’m away, but I didn’t know he doesn’t like it and he didn’t make his point clear in the first talk. He told me really acrimonious words, like “unrespectable,” “unhonest” and “irresponsible.”

[7:58] Giovanni Tweak: I think we didn't understand each other
[8:01] Giovanni Tweak: i wish you'd behave as if you were visiting a business or a school in rl
[8:02] Alina Roxley: i don't know why u think i behave like i work here?
[8:02] Giovanni Tweak: i don;t think so
[8:02] Giovanni Tweak: you do not behave like you work here
[8:02] Alina Roxley: so what's ur point?
[8:02] Giovanni Tweak: you behave like we are here just for you
[8:02] Alina Roxley: why do u think so
[8:03] Giovanni Tweak: this is my point
[8:01] Giovanni Tweak: i wish you'd behave as if you were visiting a business or a school in rl
[8:03] Giovanni Tweak: for example....
[8:03] Giovanni Tweak: do not leav your avatar at the infohub when you are not there
[8:04] Giovanni Tweak: I don't know why you do it
[8:04] Alina Roxley: i didn't know it's forbidden
[8:04] Alina Roxley: u didn't tell me
[8:05] Giovanni Tweak: I don't have time to tell you everything that you are not supposed to do
[8:05] Giovanni Tweak: this is why I asked you to be responsible and honest
[8:05] Alina Roxley: i thought u just tell me not to let others thik i work here
[8:13] Alina Roxley: u didn't tell me that i shouldn't stay here when i'm away
[8:14] Giovanni Tweak: I didn't know you needed to be told

So who is irresponsible? He didn’t tell me clear about what he likes and doesn’t like. And I followed that he told me I should definitely tell others I’m doing research. And actually I have always done this before he asked me to.

[8:09] Giovanni Tweak: I did ask you to tell you are doing a reaearch BEFORE you ask questions
[8:10] Alina Roxley: but i told them
[8:10] Giovanni Tweak: our job is to help and inform visitors and student
[8:12] Alina Roxley: i think u didn't make ur point clear until this time
[8:12] Alina Roxley: what i got from u is just that i should tell people i'm doing reesearch before i ask qs
[8:12] Alina Roxley: and i told everyone

He also thinks I’m using a lot of their time, but I don’t understand. I’ve always talked to them only when they are available and want to talk, and if they have to get busy, I didn’t interrupt them at all.

[8:01] Giovanni Tweak: you are using a lot of our time
[8:05] Alina Roxley: i don't mean to use a lot of ur time
[8:06] Giovanni Tweak: you are
[8:06] Giovanni Tweak: and the staff';s time
[8:06] Alina Roxley: i just wish if u have time and we can talk
[8:06] Giovanni Tweak: you told me you have no microphone, right?
[8:06] Alina Roxley: i don't want to interrupt when u r busy
[8:12] Alina Roxley: i didn't take any of their time when they have to get busy

He told me my research won’t do anything good to his school, and he thinks I see his school like a zoo.

[8:46] Giovanni Tweak: but this is how I see you
[8:54] Alina Roxley: if this research is good for ur school
[8:54] Alina Roxley: it should be depend on what u value
[8:54] Alina Roxley: we do this research to improve the english teaching nowadays
[8:54] Alina Roxley: especially eng teaching online
[8:54] Alina Roxley: on SL
[8:55] Alina Roxley: and maybe make ESL more well known
[8:55] Alina Roxley: if ESL is going to be included in the research
[8:56] Alina Roxley: so people read it
[8:56] Alina Roxley: so if these r not what u want
[8:56] Alina Roxley: then it's nothing good to ESL

In the first talk, I asked him why he wants to have an English teaching career on SL. He said he wants to make money and improve the peace of the world.

[6:09] Alina Roxley: why do u want to make an eng teaching organization on SL
[6:09] Giovanni Tweak: to make money and to bring peace to the world
[6:09] Alina Roxley: peace?
[6:09] Alina Roxley: can u explain more
[6:10] Giovanni Tweak: if people can understand each other they are less likely to fight

But finally he admitted he lied about the “peace of the world.” And obviously he sees only into money. And he’s afraid I may harm his career. Moreover, he has been talking to me with very bad attitude and vicious words.

[8:53] Giovanni Tweak: you have cost me 1 hour today
[8:53] Giovanni Tweak: and you have NOT asked querstions about this school
[8:54] Giovanni Tweak: I feel like I had to babysit you
[8:56] Giovanni Tweak: I have no more time now
[8:56] Giovanni Tweak: do you read what I type?
[8:57] Alina Roxley: it's u who wanted to make things clear to me
[8:57] Alina Roxley: i don;t know who wastes whose time
[8:57] Alina Roxley: i was about to go out
[8:57] Alina Roxley: but i stayed since u need to make things clear
[8:58] Alina Roxley: and what means "babysit"
[8:58] Alina Roxley: pls show ur respect
[8:58] Alina Roxley: i haven't asked qs about ESL
[8:59] Alina Roxley: because u wants to tell me something and make things clear
[8:59] Alina Roxley: this is what u called "peace of the world"
[9:00] Giovanni Tweak: Obviously I lied :)
[9:01] Alina Roxley: i knew it
[9:01] Alina Roxley: bull shit
[9:01] Giovanni Tweak: or we didn't understand each other
[9:01] Giovanni Tweak: as I said I have no more time
[9:01] Alina Roxley: u r just a money pig
[9:01] Giovanni Tweak: :)

I can say this is the worst person I have met and the worst experiences I have had on SL. I feel really bad. It really pissed me off!!

First Discussion On Group Project

2009/5/27 by Alina

Today our group found two organizations of English teaching: One is ESL found by me, the other is EF found by Water. I knew ESL from the information people provided in a group I joined. In the group there is a girl called Amalia who used to teach in ESL. She seems really helpful, but due to the constraint of time, we didn’t talk much yet. I think maybe she could be potential to let me know more about ESL and help me get the contacts of the manager, teachers and students. And also, maybe she could be included in our interview---about her further teaching experiences on SL, and the differences between her teaching in SL and RL, etc.

By the ESL link, the place I have been teleported to is a round place with glass walls. There I saw a board on which there is the class schedule on which there are classes taught in different ways: texts, voice, and skype. This link is also their class schedule: http://www.drive-through-esl.info/index.html. But I don’t know how to go to the classes yet, so I will ask. Later, Water teleported us to EF, which is a two-floor building. There are many computers and their commercial posters. We didn’t see anyone in EF. Water said she will contact the owner of this place.
Then I suggested that we make two questionnaires, one for the three organizations and the other for students. For the questionnaire for organizations, we will ask about their ways of teaching English, how they make their organizations competitive and their styles of brands, how they know their students learn from classes, the differences between teaching in SL and RL, etc. For the questionnaire for students, we will ask about how they learn from English classes on SL and the differences between learning on SL and RL, etc. The two questionnaires will be compared together and analyzed.

About the distribution of the first stage work, Water and I will be in charge of making the questionnaire for organizations, and Alice and Heather will be in charge of that for students. Afterwards, we will discuss about the two questionnaires and make adjustments. We expect to find one more organization, accomplish the questionnaires, and get more understandings of the organizations before the class next week.

[23:13] Brooke Yven: I've paid some visits to some places but only find one so far...
[23:13] Alina Roxley: i suggest wqe can search for places related to eng teaching first

[23:14] Alina Roxley: we go separately
[23:14] Brooke Yven: I've found one place named "English town" but no one there@@"

[23:15] Brooke Yven: Excuse me, Alina. Did you mean let's go find places and come back to discuss which to interview?
[23:15] Alina Roxley: we have to find three places right?
[23:16] Brooke Yven: Sure. So the "separately" you meant was to find these places now?
[23:17] Brooke Yven: ??
[23:17] Heather Alenquer: i think so
[23:17] Alina Roxley: yes
[23:18] Brooke Yven: okay. and come back to decide which to interview?
[23:18] Brooke Yven: If so, when should we come back to discuss then?
[23:19] Alina Roxley: just tell each other if we find something
[23:19] Alina Roxley: as soon as possible
[23:19] Alina Roxley: ESL

[0:23] Brooke Yven: I found another place but there is no one, either^^"
[0:23] Heather Alenquer: the classes are quite expensive!
[0:24] Brooke Yven: I think it'd be better if we can find someone to interview.
[0:24] alicealice Zepp: we just go around
[0:24] Alina Roxley: i think maybe we can interview the girl first

[0:30] Brooke Yven: Hey, we only left 10 mins to decide where should we interview and what qs we should prepare
[0:30] Brooke Yven: Are we going to decide to choose this one for sure?
[0:31] Heather Alenquer: i think so
[0:31] Heather Alenquer: but we still need at least 2 places
[0:32] Alina Roxley: but we have this one so far

[0:35] alicealice Zepp: it looks like many people will come here and learn
[0:35] Alina Roxley: it's called eng town?
[0:35] Brooke Yven: It is a company responsible for studying abroad in RL.
[0:36] Brooke Yven: Yes.
[0:36] Brooke Yven: And held by a company named EF in RL, I think.
[0:36] Alina Roxley: ok
[0:36] Alina Roxley: cool
[0:36] Brooke Yven: There are upstairs.
[0:36] Alina Roxley: sso we have two places now
[0:36] Alina Roxley: how about let's think about our suvey qs now
[0:37] Alina Roxley: rough qs first
[0:37] Heather Alenquer: ok
[0:38] Brooke Yven: I'm wondering, too.
[0:38] Alina Roxley: so can type qhat qs u think of
[0:38] alicealice Zepp: ?
[0:38] Alina Roxley: first i think of we can ask about how they have classes
[0:38] Alina Roxley: their way of teahing
[0:38] Brooke Yven: I've got four for this place but I haven't find a person to ask for so far...
[0:38] Brooke Yven: Yes.

[0:40] Brooke Yven: May be I'll try to send a letter to ask him about this place,
[0:40] Alina Roxley: so waht about we make two surveys
[0:40] Alina Roxley: one for the organizations
[0:40] Alina Roxley: one for students
[0:41] Brooke Yven: It's fine.
[0:41] Heather Alenquer: i agree
[0:41] alicealice Zepp: OK'
[0:41] Brooke Yven: But I need to look for the time when they show up firstXDD
[0:41] Alina Roxley: ya we can find ways to get contact
[0:41] Brooke Yven: Um.
[0:41] alicealice Zepp: XDDDDDD iy is a big question
[0:41] Brooke Yven: Okay, let's move to teacher?
[0:42] Heather Alenquer: ok
[0:42] Alina Roxley: ok we have our basic ideas now
[0:42] Alina Roxley: let's go

[1:13] Brooke Yven: I'm going to take some pics in EF first.
[1:13] Alina Roxley: we can go to any of the two organizations
[1:13] Brooke Yven: Call me if you have decided the place to discuss.
[1:13] Alina Roxley: maybe we can catch someone
[1:24] Brooke Yven: Excuse me, I'm not quite understand.
[1:25] alicealice Zepp: ????
[1:31] Brooke Yven: See that?
[1:32] Brooke Yven: Click on the top of your window, there is "Englishtown 40,124,23 (Mature)-Englishtown".
[1:32] Brooke Yven: It would be better if you click on the profile and send an invitation to him.
[1:33] Brooke Yven: and it's correctly.
[1:33] Brooke Yven: General →Owner: cody127Babii (Info...)
[1:34] Brooke Yven: click on the blue bottom of Info...
[1:34] Brooke Yven: And you can add him as a friend and send him IMs.
[1:34] Brooke Yven: Got it?
[1:35] Brooke Yven: Is anyone listening to me?
[1:35] Alina Roxley: ok
[1:35] Brooke Yven: Yes.
[1:35] Alina Roxley: just added
[1:35] Brooke Yven: Wonderful.
[1:35] Heather Alenquer: yes sorry i was strolling outside
[1:36] Alina Roxley: Amalia Jumanya
[1:36] Brooke Yven: Then can you see my instructions above, Heather?
[1:36] Alina Roxley: it's the girl's name
[1:36] Heather Alenquer: nice dress!
[1:36] Alina Roxley: u can add her
[1:36] Brooke Yven: Yes!
[1:36] Brooke Yven: I see.
[1:37] Alina Roxley: nice :)
[1:37] Heather Alenquer: brooke is there anything i can help now?
[1:37] Alina Roxley: brooke did u try the computer
[1:37] Heather Alenquer: i have tried
[1:37] Brooke Yven: Yes.
[1:38] Alina Roxley: the words on the computer is so small
[1:38] Brooke Yven: It linked to the web paged it provided.
[1:38] alicealice Zepp: ya
[1:38] Alina Roxley: so what about let's decide who will design which part of surveys
[1:38] Brooke Yven: We think it might be better to connect the owners and friends related to these two places we've found.
[1:39] Brooke Yven: Each of us.
[1:39] Heather Alenquer: yes
[1:39] Alina Roxley: two of us design the survey for organizations
[1:40] Alina Roxley: and the other two design the students part
[1:40] alicealice Zepp: OK
[1:40] Alina Roxley: and then exchange
[1:40] Brooke Yven: I'll take the organization of EF
[1:40] Alina Roxley: to make adjustment
[1:40] alicealice Zepp: Heather, you and me?
[1:41] Alina Roxley: i remember the survey for eavery organization should be the same
[1:41] Heather Alenquer: yes i got it

Second Life, The Second Chance of Life!

2009.4.24 by Alina from Second Life

I have been a dancer of a club, Desire Ultra Lounge, for around two weeks on Second Life. I heard from my co-workers that the owner of this club is a girl very active and serious about running the club. It lighted up my interest in her. Thus I invited her to have an interview.

Her name on SL is DestinyDesiree Foxdale. In real life, she is a dancer, twenty-eight, from U.S.A.. Her father died when she was eighteen, which has changed her life violently and made her work as a dancer. She is an extremely moody Cancer, yet she is incredibly active and ambitious. Her dream is happiness, the freedom to express herself, and to achieve her goals. She was inspired by her real-life job to run a club on SL. She started her avatar on February 11th, 2009. Since the first day in SL, she has held an ambitious plan to make a career. Besides her real-life job, she works one hundred hours a week on SL. Although Desire is just six weeks old, she has already made her Desire club very popular in very skillful ways, including building the traffic of the club, training the dancers in classes, appealingly typing words to catch people’s minds instead of body languages and rich facial expressions used in her real-life job, etc. However, making the club prosperous is not the end, she has a higher goal to achieve. She runs the club as a tactic to build a big brand for her future corporation on SL. The corporation in her plan will be as a consultant of how to run clubs on SL.

When asked of why she wants to make a career on SL, she said “I do this in hopes to one day be able to quit RL work.” Then I asked if she doesn’t like her real-life job, she said “it's not that so much, as I want to make money without having to work at all,” “I’d like to work at home and I can do it on my time.. well.. eventually.” My question went along, “do u think SL is more interesting than RL?” And she answered, “I think I have more control in SL and SL is easier but less interesting than RL. Most times I prefer the world of SL.” I asked, “do u feel disappointed with RL?” She said, “I feel disappointed with both occasionally…in SL…I have real relationships…in RL I have the same…” “In SL, I have real day- to- day events that don't go according to plan…same in the other(RL)...” “mostly, both worlds are the same… and both offer their own respective joys and disappointments.” Then I said, “so no matter which world u live in, as long as u pay ur soul into it, both don’t make difference.” She said, “exactly!!” I continued, “i think u r the person who really live in SL with seriously attitude.” She replied, “definitely!!”

In sum, DestinyDesiree Foxdale sees the opportunity in SL and wants her SL career to replace her real-life job for her preference of working freely at home and having better control of SL. And she thinks that SL and RL are the same quality to her, both have the same joys and frustrations just like real life as long as she pays the same effort, seriousness and soul into both. SL has become a second choice, chance and hope of life for her, and for a lot of people!

Different Manners Between Second Life and Real Life

2009/4/14 by Alina in second life

Today I met a girl on Second Life (SL). Let’s call her T.C. She introduced me to camp in the camping place of the club she works for. All I have to do is to dance with a pole. And while dancing, I can do whatever I like or even be “away.” This is great and thus has become my first job on SL.

I continued to chat with T.C. Then I got to know she has been a dancer and manager in the club for 2 months. I asked if she’s also a dancer in real life (RL). She answered “no heavens, no!” I continued to ask her whether SL or RL is more interesting to her. She said “well, RL is more fun but SL is zero risk,” “so I like to be a lot more dirty and erotic in SL LOL” ”plus, there's no diseases and no real pregnancy in here,” “and I don't think my little cartoon girl has an immortal soul to lose.” I checked her name card, on which there is a naked picture of her and flirty naughty self-introduction. Then, I started to be curious about what kind of person she is in RL. In RL, she is from U.S.A. and 18, works for minimum wage and go to community college. She said her parents can’t afford to send her to four-year College. I told her the information of Taiwan’s offering great scholarship for international students. She replied “hmmm that sounds like a big scary risk to take LOL” “because I've only been out of California once LOL.” The chat with T.C. is very interesting. I don’t know her look in RL. In SL, she dresses hot with half-naked boobs. And her behaviors, styles, reactions, and attitudes towards SL and RL are at opposite poles. According to what she said, she sounds a reserved girl unwilling to take risk in RL. However, In SL, she’s in a quite lusty and bold style.

Under the social norm, people are usually more cautious, conservative, self-controlled, and suppressed in RL. In the virtual anarchistic society of SL, people seem to be more adventurous and explorative because there are no risks and responsibilities for consequences. In SL, people can have sex at will without worries about “diseases and real pregnancy.” And even if they die in SL, they can simply start a new avatar again. In SL, people are able to release all their desires, consciously or unconsciously, they are forbidden to realize in RL. SL has become a duplicated real world in which people can have various identities and a vent for their suppressed desires and emotions.
